Resolution of the
Libertarian National Committee
13 December 1993
WHEREAS millions
of Americans desire to purchase such dietary supplements as
vitamins, minerals, herbs, and amino acids;
WHEREAS
interested consumers ought to be able to freely purchase dietary
supplements and companies ought to be able to sell these
products in the marketplace;
WHEREAS the Food
and Drug Administration is making use of the Nutrition Labeling
and Education Act of 1990 to drastically curtail the activities
of the dietary supplement industry and to restrict what is
available to willing consumers,
WHEREAS the
Libertarian Party has long fought for freedom for those who use
dietary supplements, health foods, and alternative medicines and
medical procedures; and
WHEREAS Senator
Orrin G. Hatch of Utah and Representative Bill Richardson of New
Mexico have introduced in Congress a bill that would ameliorate
the existing heavy-handed regulatory regime of the FDA;
THEREFORE be it
resolved that the Libertarian National Committee supports
passage of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of
1993 (S. 784 / H.R. 1709).
